Donald Trump's success in the US presidential elections and his enduring popularity have sparked numerous theories, each claiming to reveal the secret behind his appeal. These theories often revolve around pressing issues like inflation, immigration, cultural wars, and the global backlash against the political elite.
Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with a Biden administration official, who shared their insights on the reasons behind President Biden's low approval ratings and the challenges faced by Vice President Kamala Harris. According to the official, many White House staff members were deeply concerned about Trump's lasting popularity and the possibility of him regaining power.
This anxiety led them to adopt policies specifically designed to appease Trump's supporters. For instance, tariffs against China were maintained, despite knowing they were ineffective. This decision was driven by the perception that it would be popular with the public, rather than a genuine commitment to protectionism.
Similarly, the climate change bill was renamed the "Inflation Reduction Act," and most of its subsidies were sent to red states. In other words, their policy-making was influenced by a degree of fear and insincerity, which voters eventually sensed. It seems that in trying to appease multiple groups, the White House may have ultimately managed to disappoint everyone.
